The Port of Rotterdam Authority says it will be able to develop the Dutch port as a hub for liquefied natural gas (LNG) thanks to €74 million ($99.9 million) in funding provided by the European Union (EU).

The funds include a €40 million ($54 million) grant for LNG infrastructure in the Rhine-Main-Danube area and €34 million ($45.9 million) for LNG breakbulk terminals in both Rotterdam and Gothenburg.

"Together, the projects will create a logistics chain for LNG; the first in Europe," the Port Authority said.

The port has been pushing to develop the LNG bunker market and open an LNG hub before the end of 2015, which will require both the breakbulk terminal and new regulations and cooperative relationships.

The EU has been pushing for the development of LNG bunkering infrastructure in Europe through initiatives including TEN-T grants to support the development in Rotterdam and elsewhere.
