The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) is calling for a quick resolution to talks on the Clean Fuel Strategy proposed for the European Union (EU).

With the European Parliament and Council meeting to work out a compromise on the initiative, which includes plans for liquefied natural gas (LNG) refuelling infrastructure and cold ironing, ESPO says it wants to see an agreement endorsed before parliamentary elections.

"This strategy is important because it sets out a plan for Member States and stakeholders to work towards alternative fuels," said ESPO Secretary-General Isabelle Ryckb.

"We hope that this strategy is finalised soon, in view of giving the different stakeholders a clear sign on where to go and allowing them to start or continue working towards that goal.

On the LNG refuelling plans, ESPO supports the construction of a network in core European ports by 2020, but it also calls for co-funding for the projects to be ensured.

Regarding cold ironing, ESPO supports a compromise in which core ports would be required to provide shore-side electricity "wherever there is demand, the costs are not disproportionate to the benefits and there is significant positive impact on the environment, as acceptable for both institutions."

The ports group argues that shore-side power is not always the best environmental solution at all ports or on all berths.

The Port of Hamburg is among the latest ports to make plans for cold ironing infrastructure, using electricity provided by a barge using LNG.
