German shipping company E.R. Schiffahrt is using an e-learning course to improve efficiency across its 125-ship fleet, industry news site Marine Log reports.

The course is part of the DNV GL Maritime Academy and was developed by DNV GL and E.R. Schiffahrt as part of a pilot project to help operators reduce energy use.

"A team of developers explored the specific elements of on-board operations, as well as the potential opportunities available by changing crew behaviour and optimizing how equipment is used on-board," said Kathrin Stürzekarn, team leader for the Maritime Academy in Germany.

The course, aimed mainly at captains and chief engineers, offers theoretical and practical information about boosting energy efficiency through adjustments to trim and ballast, propellers and rudders, and route planning.

"The concept is based on content that is quick to teach which optimises process flows and saves energy," said Christian Heitmann, DNV GL's key account manager of business development for Germany."

"For example, when implemented effectively, the methods taught for clever maneuvering can save time and money without the needs for any additional outlays."

A survey released last month found that the vast majority of ship owners and operators are seeking improvements to energy efficiency.
