Dutch ferry operator Royal TESO N.V. (TESO) has taken delivery of its new "environmentally friendly" hybrid-propulsion Ro-Pax Texelstroom from Spanish shipyard LaNaval, the Motorship reports.

As Ship & Bunker previously reported, the vessel can utilise either low sulfur bio diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), or solar energy for propulsion.

"TESO wanted to achieve its ambition where environmental benefits, cost control and quality improvement go together. The ship embodies the latest technologies for reducing emissions," said Cees de Waal, director of TESO.

"With regards to the propulsion, it was very important to choose environmentally friendly and reliable engines."

The 1,750 person and 350 vehicle capacity vessel is slated to run between Texel Island and the Holland mainland, making the 20 minute crossing once an hour.

It is reported that, under normal operation, one of the vessel's dual-fuel engines will be used while batteries will be used for peak shaving.

The ferry's diesel engines are said to provide both redundancy and power for extra speed in the case of an emergency.

As Ship & Bunker reported in 2014, at the time the order was placed for the vessel, it was expected to be the "greenest ever ferry in Holland."
