Scrubber manufacturer Marine Exhaust Technology (MET) Tuesday was said to have completed the basic stage retrofit DFDS vessel, Ark Dania, with a hybrid scrubber system, The Motorship reports.

The hybrid scrubber is said to be capable of operating in both open-loop and closed-loop modes.

The initial stage of the retrofit has been carried out for the Danish ferry operator at the Remontowa shipyard in Poland, starting in February.

According to MET the remaining work will be done whilst the vessel is in operation.

It is understood that the Ark Dania is the first of two DFDS vessels being fitted with the hybrid scrubbers.

The new scrubbers are said to continuously monitor pH levels of seawater spray while in open-loop mode.

In closed-loop mode, the scrubbers utilise sodium carbonate instead of caustic soda which is said to be less costly.

It is understood that the scrubbers will release purified water into the sea with washwater residues collected and unloaded at ports of call.

The scrubbers are said to be set for classification by Lloyd's Register.

Last month, German environmentalists said scrubbers are "no solution" to pollution from the shipping industry.
