Danish-German ferry operator Scandlines Thursday christened the second of two newbuild, low emission, diesel-electric hybrid ferries, World Maritime News reports.

The M/V Copenhagen is set to enter service later this year on the Rostock-Gedser route, joining its sister vessel, the MV Berlin, which entered service earlier this year.

"Soon Scandlines will offer not only one but two new hybrid ferries on the Rostock-Gedser route, which has experienced growth for the last couple of years," said the company.

"The first few months with M/V Berlin in service even show double-digit growth rates."

Copenhagen is noted to be currently undergoing tests, and is expected to start sea trials in late November, in which maneuverability will be tested under both normal and unusual conditions.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the two vessels' diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system is powered by Corvus Energy's Energy Storage System (ESS).
