Alfa Laval says that Great Lakes operator NovaAlgoma Cement Carriers Limited (NovaAlgoma) is set to install a hybrid Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber system with U-design onto its newly acquired vessel, M/V Nacc Quebec.

The company says that the vessel - an "ecologically efficient" self-discharging bulker that used to operate in China - is slated to begin operation for NovaAlgoma in 2017 following conversion to meet the company's needs.

"Scrubbers are a means of profitable compliance with sulfur legislation on the Great Lakes," explained Alfa Laval, noting that wash water discharge requirements of the US Vessel General Permit (VGP) require the system to be operated in closed-loop mode.

"PureSOx offers well-proven water cleaning technology based on centrifugal separation, which will allow the M/V Nacc Quebec to sail continuously in closed-loop mode. Nevertheless, a hybrid system was selected for full operational flexibility, giving it the additional ability to sail in open-loop mode when allowed."

The U-design was selected for the vessel's scrubber over an I-design, as it is said to provide the best fit on board, and includes the flexibility of operating in bypass mode.

In May, Alfa Laval announced that its PureSOx U-design scrubber system had been made available "with greatly reduced dimensions" - a move said to boost the design's flexibility for operators.
