The U.S. Coast Guard says it is helping to contain diesel spilled from two fishing boats near Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.

A sheen was spotted in the area Friday, and the Coast Guard determined the pollution came from two grounded commercial fishing boats, the Lady Essie and Diane, which hold a total of 1,300 gallons of fuel.

The Coast Guard is working with oil response organization SWS Environmental Services to keep the spill contained and limit the impact on the environment.

The two boats ran aground Wednesday as the Lady Essie, a 65-foot shrimp trawler, towed the Diane, another shrimp boat, out of a creek, local newspaper the Beaufort Gazette reported.

The captain of the Lady Essie told the paper he was unfamiliar with the creek and wasn't aware of the shallow area.

On Monday, Coast Guard officials were looking for a way to get the remaining fuel from Lady Essie, possibly by lifting the boat, local news channel WTOC reports.
