Container Volumes, Bunkering Opportunities Up at Port of Long Beach
The Port of Long Beach says overall cargo volumes in April 2013 rose to 519,464 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), an increase of 12.5 percent year-on-year.
Imports for the month increased 13.5 percent to 264,337 TEUs, while exports increased by 14.5 percent to 137,864 TEUs compared to one year ago.
Empty containers were up also up, rising 8.1 percent to 117,263 TEUs.
For the first four months of 2013, both imports and exports are up for the port, rising 18.5 percent and 11.8 percent respectively, for an overall cargo container volume growth of 17.2 percent compared to the period in 2012.
For bunker suppliers, the news means opportunities for bunkering have also increased, with the port saying the rise in cargo volumes are in part due to the larger ships calling at the Port more frequently, and the addition of service lines starting in later 2012.
Attendees at the Port of Long Beach's recent Shore Power Summit were told that "environmental leadership and maintaining a competitive edge can, and indeed must, exist at the same time" as the port moves towards its goal of being a zero emissions port.
