WR Systems, a U.S. maker of navigation and communications equipment, says it has received more than $1 million in contracts for its Emsys Emissions Monitoring Systems and retrofit emissions scrubbers.

The Emsys system, introduced in 2010, uses a laser based multi-gas sensor and an integral particulate matter sensor to monitor ship emissions.

The company announced in November that it had received a patent for the Emsys technology, which uses a first-of-its-kind "outside of the exhaust stack" particulate matter sensor.

"We developed Emsys for two reasons, firstly to demonstrate to the industry our capability to design a robust high-tech sensor which overcomes the traditional reliability and maintenance issues with first generation EMS systems, and in addition, we were determined to earn a solid reputation for equipment performance and dependable, affordable service," said President Dave Edwards.

WR Systems, which supplies products for both government and commercial customers from its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters, says it is now working with the world's largest shipbuilders in Korea, China, and Japan, and with major oil companies, ship operators, and other maritime industries.

The company said it recently opened a Commercial Maritime Technology Centre in Jacksonville, Florida, specialising in making full navigation bridge suites and servicing marine electronics.
