Peruvian Dry Bulk Player to Succumb to Bankruptcy Amid Vessel Arrest
Dry bulk shipper Naviera Yacu Taski S.A. (Yacu Taski), a subsidiary of Peruvian Amazon Line, is expected to declare bankruptcy after its only vessel, the 20,000 DWT Yacu Kallpa, was arrested a month ago in Mexico due to the company's failure to supply crew owed wages and food, Peruvian media reports.
The vessel's cargo, which is said to consist of 4 tonnes of illegally harvested Amazonian timber, was prevented from entering the U.S. last month by customs, and has caused the Peruvian authorities to track the vessel in an attempt to halt the wood shipment.
While no charges related to the illegal cargo have been laid, the vessel was arrested by the Port Authority of Tampico under a Mexican law that prevents the vessel from being released until the crew has been properly compensated.
Members of the vessel's crew Rolando Barajas, Luis Alberto Velazquez Tito, and Wilber Alberto Correa Sandoval, who were prevented from leaving the ship since its arrest a month ago, are reported to have said that they have run out of supplies, including drinking water.
Two other crew members are reported to have been repatriated due to illness, and the remaining crew are said to have since been cleared to leave the vessel.
The Yacu Kallpa is reported to be currently listed for sale for $4 million on NautiSNP.
