Incat Crowther PTY Ltd. (Incat Crowther) today announced that Hydrus, the first in a series of four efficient and "environmentally friendly" catamaran ferries for North American Emission Control Area (ECA) operator, San Francisco-based Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) has been completed and put into service.

As Ship & Bunker reported in February, Vigor Ballard (Vigor), formerly Kvichak Marine Industries, announced that it had been awarded a contract to build further two 400-passenger ferries for WETA.

"In the spring of 2015, Vigor began construction on the first of two WETA ferries in this class" said Tim Kolb, General Manager of Vigor, adding: it’s an efficient design and very environmentally friendly."

Hydrus is set to be followed by the mid-year delivery of a second vessel, Cetus, with the two remaining newbuilds due in 2018.

"The four Vigor vessels will play critical roles in maintaining service reliability in WETA’s planned expansion of the ferry service on the San Francisco Bay," said Nina Rannells, Executive Director at WETA.

As Ship & Bunker has reported, the vessels, designed by Incat Crowther, feature MTU 12V4000 M64 EPA Tier III engines rated 1875 BHP at 1800 RPM, and ZF7600 reduction gears for the propulsion system.

The vessels are also noted to include exhaust after treatment systems.
