FortisBC Looks to Expand LNG Bunkering in US Markets
British Columbia, Canada-based FortisBC plans to develop the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) marine bunkering market along the west coast of North America from its strategic location in the Port Metro Vancouver service area, the energy company has told Ship & Bunker.
FortisBC says it is working with service providers to provide delivery solutions from California to Alaska.
"FortisBC has over 7 million gallons of LNG storage capacity at its Delta-based facility with a further 10 million gallons of storage under construction, allowing for a robust supply position to support marine market sales," the company said in a statement.
The company currently owns and operates the only two LNG facilities on the west coast of North America – the Tilbury Island facility in Delta since 1971 and the Mt. Hayes facility near Ladysmith on Vancouver Island since 2011.
"We are in the process of expanding our Tilbury Island LNG storage facility to meet the long-term projected growth for LNG as a cleaner transportation fuel and an important energy source for communities, industry and the marketplace," said FortisBC.
"Construction of the facility started in October 2014. We expect that FortisBC LNG from the expanded facility will supply vehicles, including marine vessels, by the fourth quarter of 2016."
In a first for the marine industry, in conjunction with FortisBC, Ship & Bunker recently began publishing spot LNG bunker prices.
