The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Friday said state and federal authorities were carrying out clean up operations for the "maximum potential release" of 4,000 gallons of diesel fuel and 300 gallons of hydraulic fluid after Vengeance, a freight barge, sank south of San Francisco's Bay Bridge.

Divers from Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. are said to have conducted initial underwater assessments, plugging a leaking fuel vent on Friday afternoon.

Overflight and diving operations were scheduled to be carried out Saturday, with responders on scene prepared to deploy boom.

"While no impact to the shoreline has been detected, the responding agencies continue to prioritise and prepare for potential impacts to environmentally sensitive sites," USCG stated Friday.

"No visibly oiled wildlife has been reported or observed at this time, but crews are monitoring for them."

USCG said that the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund had been opened for $50,000 for pollution mitigation.
