Power and automation technology company ABB says it will supply propulsion transformers for 12 diesel-electric powered offshore platform supply vessels being built by Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding Ltd. in China.

The 24 2,300-kilovolt ampere (kVA) 48-volt dry-type transformers will be built at ABB's Trasfor facilities, which the Swiss company acquired in 2011.

The transformers offer high efficiency and reliability because they have fewer moving parts than the standard technology.

"ABB`s oil-free dry-type transformers are a safe, reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly technology, which makes them ideal for applications such as onboard ships, where space is limited," said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB's Transformers business.

"These transformers also minimize noise levels and eliminate contamination and fire risks."

When it announced the acquisition of the Trasfor Group in 2011, ABB said the company, which had manufacturing facilities in Switzerland and Italy, would help it strengthen and broaden its transformers business.
