The Port of Singapore was been chosen as the "Best Seaport in Asia" for the 25th time at the Asian Freight and Supply Chain Awards (AFSCA) Thursday in Beijing, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) reports.

The port was chosen for its cost competitiveness, fee regime, container shipping infrastructure, and logistics, freight forwarding, and other services.

"We are honoured to receive this award once again," said Lam Yi Young, chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA).

"It is a strong validation of the confidence that our industry stakeholders have in the competitiveness of the Port of Singapore.

"We are heartened by their support and will continue in our commitment to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and an international maritime centre."

The volume of cargo moving through the port hit an all-time high in 2012, with vessels totaling 2.25 billion gross tonnes and 31.6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of container shipments arriving at the port.

The MPA is also working on new innovations to advance the marine industry, including beginning a supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers and helping to sponsor an education and research program at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).
