The Shin Yang shipyard has delivered the first ship in Malaysia with a ballast water management system, Baird Maritime reports.

"The system is a modern shipping system, the latest and most environmentally friendly," said Ling Chiong Sing, group managing director of Shin Yang Shipping.

The system filters out all marine life and microorganisms, preventing the introduction of foreign ocean life into ecosystems where the ship operates.

The Shinline 12 cargo vessel, built for local shipping firm Shinline at a price of $27.7 million, has a cargo capacity of 18,000 cubic metres, and is 128 metres long with a beam of 20.5 metres and a draught of 9.17 metres.

The ship will traverse Asian shipping routes including Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, China, and Taiwan.

Problems with invasive species in ballast water have been a focus for the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) in recent years because of their potential impact on local ecosystems, fisheries, and human health.
