MAN Diesel Building Turbochargers in China
MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN Diesel) says it has begun a program building turbochargers entirely in China for sales to shipbuilders in that market.
MAN says it is already a supplier of turbochargers to marine diesel-engine makers in the country.
The company opened a local production facility in Shanghai in 2002 that was first used for assembly and later added more component production before the operation was moved to a larger plant in Changzhou in 2011.
"China is of strategic importance for the Turbocharger Business Unit," said Ralf Großhauser, Senior Vice President and Head of the Turbocharger Business Unit.
"With the localisation of the TCR turbochargers, we are able to support our European production, shorten delivery times and cut transportation costs for the benefit of our Chinese customers."
MAN Turbocharger China recently unveiled its first TCR12 turbocharger completely assembled at the Changzhou factory and plans to add more local production, including additional frame sizes from the TCR turbocharger programme.
Shipbuilding in China has greatly increased over the past 20 years, and the country was the top shipbuilding nation for the first time in 2010.
The Chinese shipbuilding market has suffered in recent years, but some observers said last year that half of the nation's shipbuilding operations could go bankrupt, paving the way for a recovery.
