Oil Spill Cleanup Underway After Bunker Tanker Sinks in Tokyo Bay
Oil spill cleanup operations were underway after the 92 DWT bunker tanker Sunway Maru sank following a collision with 437 DWT aggregate carrier Daifuku Maru No 8 in Tokyo Bay several nautical miles off Kawasaki, Japan on Saturday, local media reports.
Sunway Maru is reported to have sustained breaches below the waterline as a result of the collision and began taking on water and leaking oil.
All the three crew members are said to have been rescued, and no injuries were reported.
The Yokohama Coast Guard was said to be working with two rescue boats equipped with oil collection equipment to clean up the spill, the size of which has not been reported, although fair weather is noted to have kept the oil from reaching the shore.
The investigation into the cause of collision is said to be under way.
In October, Ship & Bunker reported that a 14km long oil slick was caused after two tankers, Japanese-flagged Wako Maru No 2 and Panamanian-flagged Sulphur Garland, collided 10 nautical miles off Shimonoseki, Japan.
