In the wake of three ship collisions resulting in bunker spills in Singapore waters within a two week period, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) announced Tuesday that it is investigating possible "systemic issues" and implementing immediate safety measures.

MPA and the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) will hold a series of briefings for ship owners, managers, charterers, and shipping agents starting this week.

The port authority will also distribute Port Marine and Shipping Circulars to shipping and harbour craft operators focusing on navigational safety and vigilance, and the Port Operations Control Centre (POCC) will also broadcast a similar message along with its traffic information broadcasts.

"MPA is gravely concerned about the recent incidents in Singapore's waters," said MPA Chief Executive Andrew Tan.

"MPA is committed to ensuring the safety of navigation in our waters and will work closely with our partners in the shipping community to reinforce this."

SSA President Patrick Phoon said the shipping association is also committed to working on the safety issues.

"I have full confidence that my members will heed this urgent call to do their utmost to emphasise to their ships' masters and crew members to exercise vigilance at all times," he said.

"We all have an important role to play in protecting our marine environment and to ensure safety at sea."

The most recent ship collision occurred Monday in the Singapore Strait.
