A Russian tanker with almost 800 tonnes of fuel oil on-board became stranded in the Sea of Japan after suffering an engine failure, according to a number of media reports.

A statement said to be from the Russian Emergencies Ministry said, "The tanker Marine Alliance, which was sailing to the [Russian Pacific] port of Nakhodka, has been disabled due to a failure of its main engine," Russian news site BSR Russia reported.

An earlier report by Russia's Maritime Bulletin indicated the Marine Alliance had already suffered an engine failure on February 7, 2013 in rough waters and was drifting towards Okushiri Island, north of Tsugaru Strait, before a Japanese salvage vessel towed it to Hakodate port, Hokkaido, on February 11.
