NYK Line Continues R&D on LNG Bunkers for Emission Reg Compliance
Japan's NYK Line Monday announced that it has been continuing to conduct technical research and development on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers "in order to meet the tightened regulations on CO2 emissions from vessels."
The news came as part of an announcement by NYK Line that was recently presented with the 17th annual Logistics Environment Awards' Technological Development Award, recognising the emissions reductions it has achieved through Sakigake, Japan's first LNG-fueled tugboat.
"In accordance with the NYK Group's 'More Than Shipping 2018' medium-term management plan, NYK has been implementing a number of creative solutions, such as the construction of the world's first LNG-fueled car carrier and LNG bunkering vessel," explained NYK Line.
"NYK has also teamed with Engie and the Mitsubishi Corporation to develop the LNG bunkering business, and will contribute to the continuing promotion and development of LNG fuel for ships for reduced environmental loads."
In June, Ship & Bunker reported that NYK Line would be partnering with Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Gas) and Japan's transport and economy ministries on a study that will examine the viability of a LNG bunkering station at the Port of Yokohama.
