Singapore Authorities Shortlist Six Consortia to Provide Green Ammonia on Jurong Island
Singapore's authorities have identified a shortlist of consortia in their project to develop green ammonia supply for power generation and bunkering on Jurong Island.
The Energy Market Authority and Maritime and Port Authority have shortlisted six consortia that have made proposals for the project, the MPA said in a statement on its website on Monday.
The six groups will be asked to develop their proposals further in a closed request for proposal stage.
The authorities had launched an expression of interest phase from December 2022 to the end of April of this year, under which they received a total of 26 proposals.
"The closed RFP seeks to select a lead developer that the Government will work with to jointly develop the proposed end-to-end ammonia solution," the MPA said in the statement.
"This solution comprises (i) generating 55 – 65 MW of electricity from imported low- or zero-carbon ammonia via direct combustion in a Gas Turbine/Combined Cycle Gas Turbine; and (ii) facilitating ammonia bunkering at a capacity of at least 0.1 million tons per annum (MTPA), starting with shore-to-ship bunkering followed by ship-to-ship bunkering.
"Given the nascency of the technology and global supply chains, the Government will work closely with the selected developer to implement the Project.
"The RFP will be launched before the end of 2023."
Ammonia is widely expected to take up a significant share of future marine energy demand because of its lack of associated carbon emissions. But further research and development work will need to be completed first looking into how its toxicity can be managed when handling it as a bunker fuel.
