Livorno First Italian Port to Offer Shore Power
The Port of Livorno has become the first port in Italy to offer shore power, Cruise Industry news reports.
The shore power system, with power generation rated up to 12 MW, is able to support mid-sized cruise ships, says a spokesperson for the port, noting that the Sgarallino pier was the first in the port to have the system installed.
Enel, an Italian electricity and gas generation and distribution company, is reported to be planning to develop in-port electric distribution for up to 45 MW, a move that the port's spokesperson says will allow Livorno to offer shore power at other piers, as well as to larger cruise ships.
The power plant project is reported to have €3.5 million ($3.73 million) budget, 80 percent of which will be funded by the state and regional government of Tuscany.
Carlo Bergamini, an Italian frigate, is said to have been the first vessel to utilise the shore power offered in the port, having plugged in on November 12.
Earlier this month, Cavotec SA (Cavotec) in its third quarter 2015 report asserted that its Alternative Maritime Power systems for ships are "well positioned for growth, particularly as governments around the world focus on reducing vessel emissions."
