UK Chamber of Shipping Announces New Chief Executive
The UK Chamber of Shipping today announced Guy Platten, currently Chief Executive of Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL), will fill the trade association's currently vacant Chief Executive role starting in January 2014.
"We are delighted with this decision. Guy Platten's senior-level experience, leadership skills and first-hand understanding of the industry make him an excellent future leader for the UK Chamber and we look forward to welcoming him in January 2014," said UK Chamber President Kenneth MacLeod.
Platten, who was said to have been an active member of the UK Chamber for some years and is a member of its Safety and Environment Committee, is a master mariner with a long background in the marine industry.
Commenting on his appointment, Platten said: "As a passionate advocate of UK shipping and our industry I am honoured to have been selected as the next Chief Executive of the UK Chamber.
"Building on the excellent work in recent years I look forward in helping shape the UK Chamber to proactively promote and champion UK shipping.
"Shipping, in its many diverse forms, contributes so much to the UK economy and I am genuinely excited by the prospect of being able to play a part in both maintaining and growing this further.
"An early priority will be to meet as many members as possible to understand their needs and help me to develop a dynamic strategy to take us forward."
The association reported in July it would combine the roles of Chief Executive and Director General after the departures of then CEO Angus Frew, who left in August to become the new CEO of BIMCO in Copenhagen, and Director General Mark Brownrigg who said he had decided to step down from the role.
The UK Chamber of Shipping says it has around 140 members from across the maritime sector, representing over 925 ships of about 30 million gross tons.
