University of Southampton, Shell Collaborate on Ship Efficiency
The University of Southampton announced that it has created a new Professor of Ship Safety and Efficiency position using funding from Shell Shipping & Maritime.
Ship researcher Dominic Hudson has been instated in the position and will focus on exploring safety and efficiency methods in shipping, according to the university.
The new funding is an extension of an existing partnership between Shell and the university's Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.
"With about 95 percent of goods coming into the UK by sea, improvements to make ships more efficient can significantly impact trade here and globally," said Ajit Shenoi, director of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute.
"Importantly, that includes helping governments and shipping companies find ways to improve safety and 'greening' of ships."
Hudson, who is a graduate of the university, is a chartered engineer and has spent the last 20 years, involved in researching ship hydrodynamics.
Last year, researchers at the University of Southampton also released a report of how new turbulence models could help save the shipping industry billions in fuel costs.
