Antwerp Prepares for Construction of LNG Bunker Barge Station
The Port of Antwerp says it is preparing to begin construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunker station for barges, noting that a concession agreement is set for signing in the beginning of 2016.
With theĀ Rhine-Main-Danube LNG Master Plan having come to a close on December 16, the Port of Antwerp says preparations for the bunker station reasserts the port's commitment to LNG bunker development.
As Ship & Bunker reported in July, the Port of Antwerp had requested proposals for the construction and operation of a LNG bunkering and filling facility.
The port is said to have carried out required studies to support to project with the financial support of the European Commission, a process which has since resulted in environmental and construction permits.
"With the construction of a bunker station in 2017, LNG will become permanently available in the port at all times," stated the port authority.
In September, Ship & Bunker reported that the Port of Antwerp had successfully completed its first truck-to-ship LNG bunkering operation on a seagoing vessel.
In June, the Port of Antwerp announced that seagoing vessels that reduce their particulate emissions through the use of LNG bunkers or scrubbers will be eligible to receive a discount on port dues beginning June 1, 2015.
