Port of Tallinn Orders Four LNG Ferries
The Port of Tallinn in Estonia has signed contracts for four car-passenger ferry boats that are capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers.
The ships, which will be designed by Norwegian company LMG Marin, are contracted to be built by Poland's Remontowa Shipbuilding and Turkey's Sefine Shipyard.
In addition to having 600 passenger seats, they will be capable of holding 150 cars or ten road trains.
"The concluded contracts provide assurance to Estonian people that high-quality connection on the lines between the mainland and the islands by means of the new ferries conforming to contemporary requirements will be guaranteed starting with the autumn of 2016,” said Remo Holsmer, chairman of the state-owned port operator Tallinna Sadam.
The operator said that previous consultations had confirmed that the new ships were suitable to operate in existing infrastructure and that no additional investments needed to be made in the harbours.
All four ships currently have plans to continue usage of diesel until necessary LNG infrastructure is in place.
It was reported earlier this year that both the ports of Tallinn and Stockholm would cooperate to promote LNG bunkering in both areas.
