Wärtsilä Corporation says Norway cruise and ferry operator Color Line will retrofit three vessels with its open loop emissions scrubber systems, in addition to an order for one of the systems made earlier this year.

Wärtsilä said the scrubbers will allow the ships to operate within Emissions Control Areas (ECAs) without switching fuel.

The ships receiving the retrofits are SuperSpeed I, which sails between Norway and Denmark, and Color Magic and Color Fantasy, which both sale from Oslo, Norway to Kiel, Germany.

"Color Line sees environmental issues as a priority and the use of Wärtsilä exhaust gas cleaning systems on another three of our vessels is a significant step towards our goals in this respect," said Jan Helge Pile, Color Line's senior vice president for Marine & Technical.

"The marine sector is obligated to operate in a more sustainable manner and we applaud Wärtsilä for its leadership in environmental performance enhancing technologies."

The open loop system uses seawater to remove sulfur oxides (SOx) from the ship exhaust in three stages without the use of added chemicals, and water from the system is treated and discharged into the sea.

Color Line's previous order for scrubbers for its SuperSpeed 2 Ro-pax ferry is scheduled to be completed in the spring of 2014.
