Marine technology company Wärtsilä Corporation (Wärtsilä) says it has won a contract to supply exhaust gas cleaning systems, or scrubbers, for four container RO/RO vessels that the STX Offshore & Shipbuilding shipyard in South Korea is building for Italian ship owner Ignazio Messina & Co.

The scrubbers will clean sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter emissions from main engines, auxiliary engines, and the boiler.

The ships are scheduled for delivery in the second half of 2014.

"Our exhaust gas cleaning technology is well proven as being both reliable and effective in helping the industry comply with the increasingly stringent environmental regulations," said Juha Kytölä, vice president of environmental solutions for Wärtsilä Ship Power.

"The integration of Hamworthy's expertise into the Wärtsilä portfolio has given us a significant edge in meeting our customers' needs in this area."

Wärtsilä acquired Hamworthy Plc, which had an existing relationship with Ignazio Messina and had already supplied them with scrubbers in 2011, in early 2012.

Wärtsilä has announced a number of scrubber orders in recent months, including another repeat order last month.
