UK marine fuel testing company Guardian Marine Testing (GMT) has seen its sales jump from £960,000 ($1.49 million) to £7.45m ($11.55 million) in two years, UK business news site NEBusiness reports.

"We have come a long way in the past two or three years and we hope to maintain that momentum," said Managing Director Andrew Shaw.

"The plan is to continue to grow, very much so."

The company, whose clients are mainly European companies, say they can receive samples from ships anywhere in the world and can test them to ensure compliance with international regulations within 24 hours.

"That ship could have taken fuel on board," Shaw said.

"It should, in theory, put it into a segregated tank and not used until it has been given the green light from us or other fuel testers.

"If there's a problem, we can advise on how to deal with it."

The company tests fuel for quality issues including density, water content, sulfur content, and cat fines, according to its website, but has also pioneered a system for detecting chemical contamination in fuel.

Last fall, bunker supplier O.W. Bunker & Trading A/S (OW Bunker) launched a new quality control program that includes performing pre-testing analysis on the fuel it sells in an effort to drive annual global bunker claims below 1 percent.
