The navies of the US and UK responded to a distress call from a commercial ship in the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend.

An internationally-flagged merchant vessel made the distress call at 4:56 PM local time on Sunday after being harassed by three fast-attack craft from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, the US Navy said in a statement on its website.

The US and UK navies both received the distress call and sent aerial surveillance.

"The situation deescalated approximately an hour later when the merchant vessel confirmed the fast-attack craft departed the scene," the US Navy said.

"The merchant ship continued transiting the Strait of Hormuz without further incident."
