CRYO AB, a subsidiary of The Linde Group (Linde), will build the liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel gas system for a new icebreaker being built for the Finnish Transport Agency, Linde says.

"This project is an important step for the marine industry," said Lars Persson, managing director of CRYO AB.

"In the wake of a growing environmental awareness and stricter emission standards there is clearly an increasing commitment to LNG as marine fuel."

The ship's two 400 cubic meter vacuum-insulated LNG tanks, which will be installed vertically below deck, will be the largest ever used in this type of application, Linde said.

The ship, which will be capable of operating on either LNG or diesel, is being built by Arctech Helsinki Shipyard and is scheduled for commissioning by winter of 2016.

The vessel, which has been called "the most environmentally friendly icebreaker ever built," will also be able to respond independently to oil spills and provide towing services.
