Det Norske Veritas (DNV) says it will class five 18,000 twenty-foot-equivalent-unit (TEU) ships being built for United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) that it says are "some of the world's largest and greenest container ships."

The vessels will be optimised for Asia-Middle East-North Europe trade with an optimal speed between 16 and 18 knots, and they will be "LNG-ready," meaning they can be easily retrofitted to use liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkers.

The $1.4 billion order, which also includes five 14,000 TEU class boxships, was placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea, and the contract includes options for one additional 18,000 TEU vessel and six additional 14,000 TEU vessels.

"I'm pleased and proud that DNV has been selected as the preferred class for these huge and advanced ships," said DNV CEO Henrik O. Madsen.

"Through our expertise and technology, we have been able to aid in the development of these new ships, which represent a major leap forward in terms of size and operational excellence."

It was reported in May that UASC was considering buying five Triple-E container ships to start a new Europe to Asia service, to be run jointly with China Shipping Container Lines Co.
