CMA CGM S.A. (CMA CGM) today announced that it reduced its CO2 emissions per container transported by 4 percent in 2016 - a result in line with the group's 2025 emission reduction targets.

"Improved performance in the years ahead will come through the application of new technologies, including the use of alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas thanks to partnerships with energy groups such as Total and Engie," said the group.

CMA CGM notes that it intends to reduce its CO2 emissions per transported container by 30 percent by 2025, and had already improved its performance per transported container per kilometer by 50 percent between the years of 2005 and 2015.

"As the planet celebrates the World Environment Day, CMA CGM Group, a leading worldwide shipping group, reiterates its commitments on the fight against global warming by improving the performance of its ships," said the group.

CMA CGM says its emission reductions have largely been obtained through operational optimisation of the fleet, technological innovations - such as bulbous bows to improve ships' hydrodynamics - chartering of modern giant container ships equipped with new efficient technologies, and the group's eco-container program.

In October, CMA CGM announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ENGIE to promote liquefied natural gas (LNG) as bunkers for container vessels.

In Febraury, CMA CGM announced signed another MoU - this time with Total for the supply of "a range of multifuel solutions," and to work together to prepare for tightening environmental regulations in the shipping industry.
