The European Union (EU) co-funded Electrification in the Eastern Mediterranean (Elemed) project says an event held on September 28 focused discussion on the prospects of using electricity in marine transportation, as well as links with renewable sources of energy.

The event brought together local stakeholders, delegates from marine and energy industry, representatives from port authorities and governmental bodies, as well as Elemed project partners.

Elemed notes that the event was intended to raise awareness about its project work and to explore prospects of deploying shore power technologies for other uses and transport modes.

Following a presentation session, discussion focused on Cyprus' plans for cold ironing applications, projection and estimation of the cost of electricity, feasibility of hybrid technology application for local short-sea interconnections as well as integration of renewable sources and synergies with LNG.

In July, Ship & Bunker reported that an event organised by the Elemed project and the Killini Port Authority focused on a "ground-breaking" pilot project to develop shore power technology at Greece's Killini Port.
