Deltamarin Ltd (Deltamarin) today announced that it has signed contracts to provide engineering and construction support services to Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd (XSI) for Viking Line's newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled vessel.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, the RoPax ferry is slated for delivery in the spring of 2020.

Deltamarin notes that it has developed the new vessel concept together with Viking Line - an effort that is said to have resulted in a new concept that is 10 percent more energy efficient than Viking Grace.

"We are very happy about the constructive cooperation with Viking Line. From a naval architectural point of view, they presented us with every concept developer's dream challenge: to come up with a concept that is even more energy efficient in relation to cargo capacity than their MS Viking Grace, one of the most energy-efficient and sophisticated ferries on the market," Nina Savijoki, Sales Manager, Deltamarin.

Concept development is said to have placed particular focus on hull form, weight control, energy efficiency - including waste heat recovery - as well as improvement of the vessel's general arrangement.

Deltamarin is set to continue with the basic and detail design for the yard, provide project management support to the yard, and provide supervision services during the production of the newbuilding project.

"We have received good support from Deltamarin during the concept development and the worldwide yard selection phase, and look forward to continuing the work together with them and Xiamen Shipyard during the vessel construction," said Kari Granberg, NB manager at Viking Line.

As Ship & Bunker reported in November, the new vessel is planned to serve the Turku-AĚŠland Islands-Stockholm route upon completion.
