Improving ships' performance nets marine engine maker Wartsila the number five spot in Lloyd's List's top ten technology companies for 2017.

The maritime trade publication cites Wartsila's Smart Marine Ecosystem as having a beneficial effect of efficiency.

"This [system] upgrades asset and lifecycle management services by looking at customers' business operations to identify how the fleet can reduce waste and optimise performance," it said.

Automated shipping is also on the Finnish company's radar as it claims to have worked with a customer-shipowner to remote-control a ship's operations by satellite from a distance of 8,000 kilometres, according to Lloyd's List.

A Digital Acceleration Centre to speed up innovation has been opened in Helsinki and three more are on the way, it added.

Rolls Royce take the top slot for its work in autonomous shipping.

No bunker companies made it into Lloyd's List's Shipping's 100 most influential people for 2017. Some of the biggest bunker companies have made an appearance in past lists.
