Buss Shipping to Install Alfa Laval Scrubbers on Two Container Vessels
Alfa Laval has announced that in early 2016 it will install its PureSOx scrubber systems on two feeder vessels owned by Hamburg-based Buss Shipping GmbH & Co. KG (Buss Shipping), a move it says will "secure valuable fuel economy in a competitive charter market."
Alfa Laval explains that both 1,025 TEU vessels that are set to receive the scrubbers, the Condor and the Corsar, operate in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) in the waters between Rotterdam and St. Petersburg, as well as zero-discharge ports like Hamburg, and therefore require exhaust cleaning systems with closed-loop mode capabilities.
"The hybrid PureSOx systems on the Condor and Corsar will provide emission compliance with maximum flexibility and fuel economy. This will uphold the competitiveness of our offer to charter customers," said Torben Kölln, Managing Director, Buss Shipping.
"Rather than paying for expensive fuel, our container vessels will be able to serve charter customers at a competitive price – while still retaining our margins."
Alfa Laval says both vessels are set to receive hybrid PureSOx systems with multiple inlets that connect the main engine and two auxiliary engines to a U-design scrubber featuring a space-saving single jet section.
"The PureSOx solution was well engineered and allowed a sophisticated integration of the scrubber system into our container feeder ships," says Christoph Meier, Project Manager, Buss Shipping.
"The custom construction let us avoid major modifications inside the vessel, which together with the pre-outfitting gave us a short installation time. All those factors contributed to a competitive price."
Earlier this month, Ship & Bunker reported the launch of Alfa Laval's inline I-design scrubber, saying that the addition makes its PureSOx platform "even more versatile" by providing another alternative for vessels with more complex structural needs, including certain RoPax and cruise vessels.
