Wartsila Monday presented a new Anchor Handling Tug Supply (AHTS) vessel design it says will reduce fuel consumption by 20 to 25 percent compared to conventional diesel mechanical four-engine systems.

In addition to fuel efficiency, the focus of the new design was said to be on simplicity, efficiency, and a reduced environmental impact.

The firm unveiled the new AHTS design at this year's Sea Asia exhibition, held in Singapore from April 21 to 23.

"Our ship designs consistently set new standards in terms of efficiency and environmental sustainability," said Wärtsilä Ship Design vice president Riku-Pekka Hägg.

"Our unique expertise, knowledge, and global support are the keys to maximizing the profits and asset values of our customers."

The new Wärtsilä series of AHTS designs, which are fully compliant with ABS and the latest SOLAS regulations, features Bollard Pull options of 180 tonnes, with options for 150 or 220 tonnes, and a hybrid propulsion system with a two-speed gearbox.

Wartsila says the designs are suitable for medium to large size AHTS vessels.

Earlier this month the firm said its new Wärtsilä Svanehøj ECA Fuel Pump would be an "important enabler" for the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as a marine fuel.
