Alfa Laval today said it has received the first order for PureNOx Prime, the latest and smallest footprint offering in its PureNOx line of water treatment solutions for Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) systems.

The technology will feature on five new build very large ethane carriers (VLECs) to be built in China by Dalian Shipyard, and eventually operated by United Ethane Carriers (UEC).

"Receiving this breakthrough order so soon after the introduction of Alfa Laval PureNOx Prime confirms that we've succeeded in our goals," says Kristina Effler, Alfa Laval Global Business Manager, Water Treatment Exhaust Gas Emissions.

"PureNOx Prime retains the proven PureNOx performance, but its smaller footprint, leaner design and lower investment cost are all adapted to market demands. Clearly, the market is responding."

Specifically for use with low-sulphur fuel, the PureNOx systems clean the circulation water in an EGR process to prevent soot and other compounds is exhaust gases from accumulating in the EGR scrubber, and potentially corroding the engine.

EGR systems themselves allow vessels to meet Tier III NOx emission limits, which all ships built as of January 2016 are required to meet.

Last June Alfa Laval said its PureNOx system had been approved for use with the MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (MAN) EGR system.
