Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) Monday announced it has delivered a newbuild liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, which it says is capable of delivering $1 million in annual bunker savings, to Knutsen OAS Shipping AS (Knutsen), LNG World Shipping reports.

The 176,000 cubic metre (cbm) La Mancha Knutsen has a number of energy saving features, including a boil-off gas system that, in contrast to conventional systems that can only partially re-liquefy BOG, is said to be capable of re-liquefying 100 percent of the BOG for later use as fuel by the ship fuel.

HHI says the gas treatment system is capable of saving $1 million in annual bunker costs, or $25 million over the expected vessel life of 25 years.

The new delivery is said to be the first of a series of two vessels ordered by Knuten from HHI in 2014, each valued at more than $203.7 million.

In March, Ship & Bunker reported that HHI had signed a joint development project agreement to work with Lloyd's Register (LR) and General Electric (GE) on the design of a 14,000 TEU container ship powered by LNG fueled gas turbines and electric motors.
