ESL Shipping says its second "extremely energy-efficient" liquefied natural gas (LNG)-fuelled dry cargo vessel Haaga was launched today at the Jinling shipyard in Nanjing, China.

The event follows the launch of sister vessel Viikki at the end of August.

"Haaga and its sister vessel Viikki are first LNG-powered handy-size bulk carriers in the world," explained

"The 160-meter vessels of 25,600 DWT fuelled by liquefied natural gas produces more than 50 percent lower carbon dioxide emissions than vessels of the previous generation."

The two vessels are slated to begin operations on the Baltic Sea in the first half of 2018.

As Ship & Bunker reported in November, Aspo plc said its subsidiary ESL Shipping, through the EU's Connecting Europe Facility for Transport instrument, was set to receive as much as €5.9 million ($6.25 million) between 2016 and 2019 to support the construction of the company's newbuild LNG-fuelled Handysize dry bulk carriers.
