Classification society American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Monday announced the release of new guidance to help the industry with condition monitoring.

"There have been significant advances in condition monitoring software and diagnostic technologies that have the potential to improve operational efficiency and enhance overall safety," said Howard Fireman, Chief Technology Officer for ABS.

"These changes are reflected in these newly released documents."

The classification society's two newly released documents include ABS Guidance Notes on Condition Monitoring Techniques, which is intended to help owners decide upon appropriate monitoring techniques, and the ABS Guide for Surveys Based on Machinery Reliability and Maintenance Techniques, which provides updated methodologies for achieving classification notations related to machinery reliability and maintenance management programs.

ABS says that condition monitoring can minimise service time and can help anticipate equipment failures, translating to reduced downtime for service and repair.

Further, ABS says that applying the guidance provided in the newly released documents can support better system selection, as well as streamline the classification process.

In January, ABS announced that it had signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC) to increase collaboration on offshore and marine sector operational efficiency and environmental performance.
