Eco Reporting Groups Explore Merger
Two environmental reporting groups say they are exploring a merger that would create uniform reporting and assessment tools for cargo owners.
BSR's Clean Cargo Working Group (CCWG) and the Clean Shipping Index (CSI) say the partnership would allow for more efficient data collection and reduce confusion caused by multiple standards for ecological soundness in the maritime industry.
"Alignment behind one initiative is of great importance to the industry and our members, and this will help us more quickly reach our common goal of improving the environmental performance of the transport and logistics supply chain," said Angie Farrag-Thibault, project director of CCWG.
Merijn Hougee, CSR director for CSI, said the groups want to create a "one-stop-shop" for evaluating shipping on environmental standards.
"Creating a global initiative by blending the approach of the two most widely recognized programs is an opportunity that we are proud to be cultivating," Hougee said.
CCWG is a decade-old group that gathers data from more than 2,300 ships, including more than 60 percent of global ocean container capacity, according to its website, while CSI is a benchmarking tool used by 19 of the 20 largest container carriers to evaluate cargo ships and carriers.
