Two separate and seemingly unrelated cases of suspected illegal bunker activity in Singapore this week has resulted in a total of 13 people being arrested, according to information released by the country's Police Coast Guard (PCG).

PCG says $9,000 in cash was seized and eight men were arrested on Sunday after they were suspected of illegally selling 20 metric tonnes (mt) of MGO valued at $12,840 ($9,450) to a foreign-registered tugboat off Jurong Shipyard.

Straits Times reported PCG has received a tip-off at 10.19am on Sunday over the alleged illegal activity.

"PCG will spare no efforts and continue to step up enforcement against such offenders," Commander of the Police Coast Guard, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SAC) Hsu Sin Yun said in a statement.

On August 1, and following a separate a tip-off, PCG then arrested five men for their suspected involvement in the misappropriation of three mt of MGO valued at about S$1,650 ($1.200) at the sea off Penjuru.

The MGO was found in a hidden compartment of a Singapore registered tugboat.

"Preliminary investigations revealed that the crew members had misappropriated the three metric tonnes of MGO with the intention to sell them for monetary gain," PCG said.

In addition to various fines, all 13 suspects face the prospect of imprisonment of up to 15 years if found guilty, PCG noted.
