Germany-based Babcock Noell GmbH has signed a deal to supply a scrubber system to a Carl Büttner-owned tanker, Babcock Noell announced in an emailed statement.

The company's hybrid BNG Scrubber will be installed aboard the MT Aurelia, and can operate in both open loop and closed loop mode.

The system's water treatment process was also paid special attention, Babcock Noell added.

"A substream of the process water is treated in a unit for precipitating heavy metals," said the company.

"Hence, the selected technology exceeds the present legal requirements."

Other key characteristics were said to be cost-optimized operation, compact design, use of non-corrosive materials, use of low-maintenance system components, and high system availability thanks to system redundancy of vital system components.

Previously, Babcock Noell was largely focused on minimising emissions technology for power plants, thought it has shifted to ships in recent years, according to the company.

In February, it was reported that scrubber sales had been impacted by the decline in bunker prices as ultra-low sulfur fuels became a more financially attractive option.
