Rickmers to Spend $50M On Energy Efficiency Ship Retrofits
Rickmers Group has announced that roughly $50 million will be spent to retrofit its fleet with energy-efficient measures such as new bulbous bows.
In addition to the bows, potential upgrades also include changing screw types, re-engineering load-securing systems, strengthening hatch covers, and switching to new loading software.
Rickmers said that the plans were prompted by customer demand for lower costs per container transported, though the deals will also require charter customers to pay for a portion of the upgrades.
"They will be carried out in close agreement and with a very significant cost participation of the customer," the company said.
The changes are also expected to increase chartering options in the future, in addition to raising the value of the ships.
"Our investment strategy not only comprises investments in energy-efficient ships ... but also intentionally represents value-adding platform investments in our existing tonnage," said CFO Mark-Ken Erdmann.
"This will pay off, also in terms of our long-term portfolio management and our balance sheet."
Earlier this month, the company also announced that it would be jointly investing a total of $260 million in the construction of three newbuild energy efficient box ships.
