ABB says two shaft generators will be installed on two DFDS RoRo vessels enabling the main engines to operate at a wider and more optimal speed range, boosting efficiency in the process.

The ships will also receive two of ABB's high-performance A270-L turbochargers, which will further reduce bunker consumption and associated emissions.

"For the typical demands of low-speed marine engines, the turbochargers offer greater engine operating flexibility: high pressure tuning for part or low loads, and designed for best efficiency in slow-, and ultra-slow steaming," explained ABB.

The shaft generator system is noted to draw its power from main engines, increasing safety in the event of a failure on the auxiliary engine.

"Efficiency and safety are cornerstones of the maritime industry and our shaft generators will introduce both to these DFDS vessels. Not only is this an environmentally friendly technology but it is also very cost effective," said Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB’s Marine and Ports business.

As Ship & Bunker has previously reported, DFDS has ordered the two bunker-saving RoRo newbuildings as part of its ongoing fleet renewal project intended to increase the company's operational efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
