Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) Tuesday announced that an in-service demonstration test of a wind resistance-reducing windshield for container ships demonstrated that the device reduces emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) by an average of 2 percent.

As Ship & Bunker reported in 2015, the windshield, which was co-developed by MOL, was installed on the bow of the MOL Marvel for the demonstration test.

The company says the average 2 percent CO2 savings was confirmed while sailing the vessel at 17 knots per hour.

"MOL continues efforts to confirm the windshield's seaworthiness and sailing data analysis, and looks forward to more advanced technological development based on this research project," said the company.

"MOL continually pushes ahead with its 'ISHIN NEXT - MOL SMART SHIP PROJECT' to develop and introduce new technologies that will reduce vessels' environmental impact and ensure safe operation, while delivering safe, reliable transport services."

Last week, MOL announced its decision to build Japan's first LNG-fuelled tugboat as part of Ishin Next - MOL Smart Ship Project.
